The Beauty of a German Shepard

Captain Max von Stephanitz originated the breed of the German Shepard in the late nineteenth century. The Captain greatly admired the landrace herding dogs of Germany and believed that this type of dog could be used for a working dog. The Captain was acute made aware of the fact that herding dogs were in a decline due to little use. This was one reason the Captain wanted to create the German Shepard, a dog that was “all-purpose” and hard working.

As the years progressed and World War II struck the American and British soldiers were impressed by the German Shepard. The soldiers brought examples of the dog home and the German Shepard became an overnight success. Today, the German Shepard is loved as a working dog and as a family pet.

A German Shepard usually weighs around seventy-five to ninety pounds. The coat of a German Shepard is usually gray, tan, black, and gold and sometimes there are patches of white. The German Shepard’s coat requires daily brushing and this type of dog needs to be bathed occasionally. The most important thing that a German Shepard needs on a daily basis is a long walk. The German Shepard is considered to be an excellent dog around children and with other animals. This type of dog does best when kept outdoors.

The German Shepard was used for years as a sheep herding or military work dog. Now, the German Shepard is used as a beloved companion and at times a work dog. The Police are known for using German Shepard’s in their line of work. The German Shepard has a life expectancy of twelve years. This is considered to be a great herding dog.

The German Shepard is a gentle and loyal companion. This is a great dog for an individual or for a family to own.
