5 Ways to Stop a Dog Chewing

by Craig Clemins

Puppies love to get up to mischief. Destroying furniture and shoes seems to come naturally to them. In this article I will teach you 5 simple things you can do to stop your puppy chewing for good.

Step 1 is to get you dog to a vet for a full check up. Make sure your dog is healthy and that there are no medical illnesses giving her the need to chew.

Chewing is one of the most important phases dogs go through, it shouldn’t be banned totally, all you should be trying to achieve is to teach your dog what can and what can’t be chewed. You also need to teach your dog about items that are dangerous to chew - such as power-cords etc.

The best way to teach your puppy what it isn’t allowed to chew it to use the “No” command. Give a firm “No” anytime you catch your dog chewing something it shouldn’t be, then take that item away from the dog if possible. If your puppy persists, give it a squirt of water to the face.

When you move to take the object away from your dog, make sure you do it in a controlled manner. Don’t rush up to take it away as this may get your dog thinking that you want to play.

The idea is not to destroy your dogs chewing aspirations. You should encourage it to chew on chew toys, bones and crunchy biscuits instead of your shoes.

Some puppies and dogs may resist when you try to teach them not to chew. If this is the case, be cautious as your dog may turn aggressive on you.

The tips above will work and your dog will stop chewing, all they need is a little practice and patience. Give your dog some time and she will end up mastering them.

During any stage of dog training, consistency, persistence, and patience are the keys to success. Curbing or looking to stop dog chewing habits is generally one of the tougher challenges as you’re training your pet to not do something, instead of doing something.
