The first thing you must decide is how big you want your vegetable garden to be and just where you're going to place it in your yard; you want somewhere that has good drainage, good access to sunlight and deep soil. You will also need to have room for a fence (or other means to keep the animals out who may enjoy your vegetables as much as you do) You then need to prepare your soil: your garden area needs to be plowed (get rid of and control weeds and lawn etc) and mulch mixed in. Mulching is an important parts as the organic matter added to the soil releases minerals etc your vegetables want and need to grow. As you decide on what vegetable you plan on growing it may depend on what type of mulch/compost you use as certain vegetable have different requirements. You will then want to decide on how you plan on arranging your garden, while there is no set format (and conditions will vary depening on climate and season etc) some plant all tall growing plants together at the back of the garden and the shorter at the front etc. Once you have the garden area and soil ready you need to make the desicion on what you want to plant - here you'll need to take into account the season, climate and other factors that will vary depending on where you live. Also make note of what plants can be treated the same - some may need more water than others etc. Once you're vegetable garden has been set up, make sure you continue to care for it: remove weeds, make sure your vegetables are receiving the right amout of water and other nutrients and have not succumbed to disease or insects etc. Depending on what type of vegetable you're growing it may not be long at all before you're eating your own home grown vegetable - and I bet it tastes better :-) |
