Some times it's a smooth transition, unfortunately though that's not always the case as depending on the family there could be many outside factors that need to be taken into account. Being a step-parent may bring about issues you hadn't previously thought of, your step children may be being raised in a way you're unaccustomed to or you may not be sure what type of role you should take in regards to discipline or other family matters.

Then too are those times where your step children may feel you treat them differently than your own children or feel like you're trying to replace a parent etc so you will need to make sure you have your own set of ground rules and guidelines depending on the situation.

The articles within th-s site will hopefully help you, as a step parent, understand your rights and give you the advice you need when it comes to approaching certain situations and helping to raise your partners children.
