An attractive landscape can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your home. But for some people, it’s difficult to come up with good ideas for landscaping their property. The choices can seem overwhelming, as well as a lot of work.
To help make it easier for you, here are some simple landscaping ideas. It’s simple to put these tips into use. Your yard will be neat and attractive and you won’t have to work too hard to achieve it.
1. Start by evaluating your soil in order to determine what kind of vegetation you should plant. Some plants thrive in soil with more acidity, and others prefer a little more alkali. Some soil contains a lot of sand or clay, and some is loamy. Sometimes you can add soil amendments in order to make your soil conditions more favorable for the plants you want to grow.
2. You should know how much space each plant and shrub needs to be healthy. Some root systems take up more space than others. A plant that grows wildly without sufficient room will crowd out your other plants. Also, make sure you understand the spacing requirements between plants. Allow sufficient room for the growth of their branches and leaves.
3. Use plants that are indigenous to your region. This way you’ll know that the plants you choose are appropriate for the climate and soil. If you do use non-native plants, look for ones that share a climate similar to the one in which you live.
4. Consider the various times at which your plants will bloom when planning your landscape. If all of your plants are at their most attractive at the same time, then your yard will only look beautiful for a few weeks each year. You can work around this problem by putting in plants that are attractive when green but also bloom at some point in time. It’s also a good idea to alternate plants that bloom at different times of the year. For example, space early blooming tulips and crocus among plants that flower later in the season.
5. Use wood chips or decorative bark around shrubs, bushes and trees. This makes an attractive covering for the ground that is nicer than plain dirt. As well, it helps to retain moisture, keeps weeds from springing up, and breaks down into valuable nutrients for the soil. Using attractive groundcover is another good landscape design idea. Try growing hens and chicks around your shrubs and trees.

Great ideas! a local garden center should be able to help every one of these steps. We got a soil test kit from our local university’s ag department. I get good ideas too from photos of other peoples’ projects. Lots of good photos and tips on http://www.yardshare.com. When you’re done with your project you can upload your photos there too!
