Decorating mistakes can be very expensive and reflect heavily in the final result of your project and your overall happiness. When decorating on a budget it is important to remember some important design concepts to save you time and money by doing it right the first time.
Choosing style, space planning, color schemes, the use of focal point and visual weight objects, and lighting are all key elements in all good design. Familiarity with materials and furnishings is also important to ensure your chosen look will not be outdated tomorrow and that it will flow with other areas of your home.
An important first step in any design project is choosing a style, whether contemporary, traditional, transitional, tropical chic, or casual versus formal. That style should both highlight and compliment your existing decor and architecture while reflecting your families’ lifestyle.
A simple design can be transformed into grand by the addition of a few key objects including the right artwork, accessories, rugs, and plants. Additionally, the use of vertical and corner arrangements, selection of focal point components, and most importantly, the room’s layout and space planning are all major components to any room’s design.
The proper use of lighting is another important aspect of interior design. From ambient accent lighting to task lighting, proper lighting can be the difference between a professional, polished look and a disappointing result.
Choosing furnishings that are the proper scale for the space is a key element to good design and decorating. A well-designed room will have good use of proportion and scale while keeping closely related to the architecture of the home and the lifestyle of the family who lives there. To do this all within your decorating budget can be the tricky part ~ that is where Design on a Dime helps you succeed!

Design on a Dime sounds like a great book for interior decorators looking to give a great look to their remodeling project while saving a couple of extra bucks along the way. I am definitely gonna have to check out this book so I could pick up a couple of tips for my remodeling project. Have you guys heard of Design Star? It’s a great show on the HGTV network, for whom i work with, that shows 11 interior designers competing to win their own TV show on the network in the near future. The show takes place in Vegas so mixed in with the diverse cast of characters and the Vegas limelight, you can bet there is a lot of drama to go along with the designing. Check out the site http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/design_star/?xp=DS2_21 to see a sneak peek and meet the cast before you tune in on July 22nd, at 10 PM to catch the premiere of the 2nd season of Design Star
