The utility bill is one of the biggest challenges and account holders often dread opening the envelope or logging into their account each month. Take a close look at your air-conditioning unit or heating furnace when you are considering how to reduce utility bills. In colder climates a furnace can work really hard during the cooler months to warm your home, whilst in the sun belt an air-conditioning unit can account for a significant part of your energy bill. Change filters regularly and make sure to clean piping of debris that might have accumulated or mold. Each unit should be serviced to ensure that it keeps up.
One way to look for a reduction in your bill is to ask your utility company if they will help you by enrolling you in a special power saving program. In return, the provider will issue monthly credits to reduce utility bills and they will have the option to interrupt your service very briefly if they experience periods of heavy demand elsewhere.
Pick up the phone and call your utility company and ask them if they would send an expert over to really analyze your usage. The expert will be able to advise you ways to save money against your monthly tally.
Warm air rises and can escape through a badly insulated loft. If you looking for a good way to reduce utility bills, add insulation up there. Whilst looking for places that air can escape, check around all your windows and doors for leaks.
Energy Star compliant bulbs are as much as 75% less energy than conventional bulbs. Change out all these bulbs and reduce utility bills the easy way. When you are not in a room, make sure that you turn off all the lights and remove the plugs, appliances, computers or other items when not in use.
It is not necessary to run your dishwasher everyday and you can save consumption of water and help reduce utility bills by running your washer every other day or even less frequently. It is okay to reuse glasses during the day without re-washing each one and you can even wash some items by hand for a change.
By far one of the better ways to reduce utility bills in an older house is to install a draft snake around windows or door draft stoppers in the doorways. As older houses settle, tiny gaps can appear under and around doors and windows. Most of the time it is far more cost effective to simply place the door snake or flexible draft stopper in the problem area.
